Canadian Travel Tips

Things you need to know before visiting Canada

Things you need to know before visiting Canada

How to dress for the Canadian winter

How to dress for the Canadian winter

Banff Western Connection will take place on January 23-25, 2025.

January in Banff is typically the coldest month of the year. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, with averages ranging from -10 to -15 degrees Celsius (14 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit).

Snow is also very common during this time, making it a winter wonderland.

Given the cold temperatures, we recommend that attendees pack warm clothing. Layers are key to staying warm.

Consider packing:

  • thermal underwear

  • a warm sweater or fleece

  • a heavy winter coat

  • waterproof pants if you plan on participating in any outdoor activities.

Don't forget your winter accessories such as a hat, gloves, and a scarf!

Do I need a visa to visit Canada?

US citizens are granted a six-month travel visa to Canada (no application necessary.)

Do I need a passport to enter Canada?

Yes, if you are not a Canadian citizen, in order to travel to Canada, you do need a valid passport or NEXUS card.

Which airport do I fly into to get to Banff?

Banff does not have its own international airport. The nearest international airport would be Calgary International Airport (YYC).

Banff is about 90 miles west of Calgary International Airport (about a 1h 35m drive). Shuttles are available directly from the airport and included in our US Travel Packages.

Do I need to worry about wildlife?

Banff National Park is known for its amazing wildlife. In Banff, wildlife can be spotted throughout the year, including in January. While some animals, like bears, will be in hibernation during this time, others such as elk, deer, coyotes, and even wolves might be active. In addition, birdwatchers will find a variety of species to spot.

While it can be exciting to observe wildlife, it's crucial to do so safely. Remember to never approach or feed wildlife and maintain a safe distance.
